Professor of Contemporary History and Social Movements at the University of Granada (Spain). He obtained his Ph.D. in History in 1992. He is the author of over a dozen books, including the direction of the first Encyclopedia of Peace and Conflicts in Spanish (2004) and his latest book, “Nonviolence or Barbarism? The Art of Not Allowing Dehumanization” (2017). His research has focused on political transitions to democracy, peasant movements, and social mobilizations for peace and nonviolence.

He has served as a diplomatic advisor to the United Nations in the peace process in Colombia and for the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation and Development. He has provided advice on civil diplomacy, nonviolent training, and social dialogue to various governments (Colombia, Ecuador, Spain, and Mexico) and has trained teams in processes of reconciliation, social leadership, and democratic governance.
